Setting Goals

An aspect of the weight loss process that can sometimes be overlooked is that of setting realistic goals and then working towards achieving those goals. Ultimately achieving goals is a definite confidence booster and really helps motivate a person to continue with their strategy for losing weight and attaining the physically fit and toned body they dream of having. This article takes a look at the setting of and working towards realistic, achievable weight loss goals.

Make Your Goals Achievable

This is a point that cannot be stressed enough. When setting goals for how much weight you want to lose in a target time frame, always set them low enough so that you know you can achieve them. Its no good deciding that you are going to lose 60 pounds in a month and then going at it will all your enthusiasm, only to find that you have not even come close when the time comes. This will deflate your confidence and dampen your enthusiasm and can even derail your attempt at losing the weight you want to lose.

However, when you set smaller goals that you believe are physically achievable, then when you do hit your target at the end of the month, or whatever your time frame happens to be, then you feel great and spurred on to set the next goal to go for. It is all about working with your own belief system to create a situation where you know deep down inside that you can do a thing and then you strongly reinforce that belief by your achievement. This sets you up for the next target to go for and you will go at it with even more enthusiasm and motivation than before.

Slow and Steady

When setting your next goal, spend some time thinking through what would be doable for you. Then think about the parable of the hare and the tortoise and realize that as long as you work towards your goal in a slow and steady manner, you will get there much more easily than had you tried to do more than you were capable of doing.

That doesn't mean you should not push yourself to some extent. Achievements are all the more sweet for having put in a reasonable amount of effort in getting there. Just don't raise the bar too high or you won't get over it no matter how much you try.

In the end, the goals that you set for yourself to lose weight will be ones that you, personally believe that you can reach. Other people will set different goals to you, for a variety of reasons. What you do will and should be yours and yours alone, because they will meet your own personal needs, characteristics and aspirations.
